This Semi-Retired Beach Bum just can’t shake the techno-monkey off my back.
I’m powered by my daughter and granddaughter (even lucked out with a great son-in-law). So the rest is gravy.
You think this Web stuff is tough – well back when I was a kid, we had to walk uphill 5 miles in the snow (both ways) with deck of cards, just to compile a COBOL program.
I’ve spent 30+ years in corporate IT. I’ve seen, and have played a significant role in many deployments ranging from wonderfully elegant to downright nasty.
So I did what anybody who grows up in the frigid northeast US does – head to Florida, The Sunshine State. Wow the sun is a great thing. So, I’m on the beach, sipping a tasty beverage and now I have the time to investigate the Free and Open Source Community.
It started with building my own computer. Up till now, I was using work equipment with standard hardware and software (if you’re supporting 1000′s, it makes sense). I had never built build my own PC from scratch. It’s amazing how these young game wizards are pushing the industry. Overclocking and FramesPerSecond are their KPI’s.
Ok, now I’ve got my 60′s Muscle PC, pushing 4.5 GHz and I’m cruising. A saucy little CMS catches my eye. I become enchanted with WordPress. Just an adorable little package – only 11 tables.
I’ve become a WordPress Fanboy (that’s what the kids call it, right?). Currently a 60 million install base, policies and procedures that rivals corporate giants (just check out the codex). All done within a volunteer community. Massive global development. Release/change management. Open source. Yippee! Anyone can contribute. You just need something useful. Well now I have my goal. To be a useful contributor to this world wide community.
Come on challenge me
